Renowned for its unique history, culture, and notably kind local communities, this idyllic seaside destination is the perfect backdrop for an incredible volunteer adventure in Africa. Our Mozambique volunteer programs work primarily in one lively coastal village, Tofo.

Praia de Tofo, Mozambique

A colourful tourist town, Tofo is a community filled with life, culture, and endless opportunities for incredible adventures. Considered one of the best places in the world for spotting whale sharks, manta rays, and even humpback whales, Tofo is the ideal place to unplug and be swept away in the beauty of Mozambique’s unique marine life.

The true definition of a hidden gem, this small coastal village is home to some of the whitest sand beaches in the continent, without the tour groups that often flock to Africa’s more notable vacation destinations. At African Impact, our mission is to provide the best international volunteer programs in Africa that create real, sustainable impacts on local communities. While our volunteer projects may be unpaid, we absolutely believe they are a life-changing experience for volunteers and locals alike!

As an African-based company, we know first hand the incredible adventures available on our stunning continent. We live and breathe all things African travel and are passionate about immersing volunteers in the heart of some of Africa’s most incredible natural environments and communities. Developing meaningful relationships with locals, learning about unique African cultures, and exploring breath-taking natural wonders, you’ll experience the true spirit of Africa and the people, places, and wildlife that make it so extraordinary.

To us, epic adventures and sustainable impacts go hand-in-hand. We firmly believe in the power of responsible volunteering to positively transform the lives of volunteers and local communities alike. Developing our projects with local community stakeholders, everything we do is measured, designed, and implemented with the community’s goals in mind. As a volunteer joining one of our projects, your work will not only be a life-changing experience for you but make actual, sustainable impacts on the lives of the local community.

This combination of incredible adventures, responsible impacts, and cultural immersion allows us to go beyond the conventional understanding of “volunteering abroad” and offer innovative African volunteer travel experiences that – while unpaid – can truly transform lives!

Marine Conservation in the Indian Ocean

Across the world, our oceans are under intense threats. Global warming, increased CO2 in the atmosphere, and unsustainable human practices in marine environments are having devastating impacts on all sea life. Home to some of the most diverse marine species on the planet, Africa’s oceans are not immune to these negative consequences. To secure the future of Africa’s unique marine life – and sea creatures around the world – comprehensive marine conservation efforts are essential.

As a volunteer on one of our marine conservation volunteer programs in Mozambique, you’ll spend your days out on the Indian Ocean supporting local ocean preservation efforts. By participating in exhilarating research dives to collect data on local coral reefs and megafauna’s health, your volunteer work will be integral to advancing sustainable, long-term conservation aims that seek to protect our precious marine environments.

Tasks on these scuba-diving research projects are highly variable but often include unique responsibilities like collecting photo ID kits on local marine creatures, monitoring the health of local species, and identifying distinguishing features on specific sea creatures. If you have yet to gain your PADI certification, we can include it in your program fees and ensure you are ready to dive into an incredible marine adventure!

Mozambique Program Fees

Our Mozambique volunteer programs start at $3,060 and increase depending on which project you join and how long you volunteer with us. These costs cover your volunteer accommodation, meals, 24/7 in-country support, project and airport transportation, project orientation, and any project equipment volunteers may need.

African Impact Sustainability Fund

As a commitment to sustainable development in the communities we work in, all volunteers pay an additional $25 to the African Impact Sustainability Fund. This money goes directly to the African Impact Foundation, which independently ensures the sustainability of our projects in local communities and guarantees impacts continue long after volunteers leave. If you have additional questions about this donation, you can visit our page on the Sustainability Fund here.
