We are hiring a volunteer manager for our team in Zanzibar! We are looking for a fun, vibrant team player to help in the coordination of our International volunteers, volunteer house and community projects.
You need to be great with people from all walks from life, really organized and have a lot of energy. Your team of volunteers will be diverse with a range of nationalities, ages and backgrounds. You will be responsible for maintaining a positive vibe, helping them make the most out of their experience with us in Africa, from both a work and leisure perspective.

Overall Responsibilities
You will be responsible in making sure our international volunteers are comfortable in their accommodations and enjoying their volunteer experience. You will need to balance your time between managing relationships, planning activities, actively seeking new partnerships to expand the programme, encouraging and supporting volunteers and reviewing the projects and proposing changes based on feedback.
Detailed Responsibilities
Planning – ensuring people and projects are prepared in advance:
- Liaise with incoming international volunteers and help set expectations
- Manage travel and accommodation logistics including airport pick-up and drop-offs, room arrangements and volunteer meal coordination
- Work in partnership with the Project Teams to understand the needs of the community and to ensure activities are right for the communities and for volunteers
- Guide and work with volunteers to plan, execute and review activities
- Lead and coach the coordinators to deliver the volunteer experience and to run some community project.
Doing – day to day project involvement and reporting
- Supervise volunteers by offering expertise and guidance, ensure they have an understanding of their projects and are prepared for their lessons
- Work with the Project Teams on each volunteer’s project placements
- Organise and communicate daily activities for volunteers based on the weekly schedule
- Help answer volunteers’ questions and resolve any issues that come up on project or in the volunteer house
- Be actively involved in social activities with volunteer, always maintaining a professional relationship & creating a positive volunteer atmosphere- present, enthusiastic & engaged.
- Spend time to get to know and show an interest in all the volunteers
- Ensure volunteers are adhering to our Code of Conduct and working within the framework of our Child Protection Policy
- Resources and equipment – work with project teams to make sure there are enough resources i.e. having enough of the right kind of resources, working with other staff to plan ahead to ensure we have the right equipment for projects
- Oversee and guide the Project Teams
- Work alongside the Base manager to maintain strong partner relationships for long term sustainable projects.
- Clearly demonstrate adherence to the Code of Conduct, Standard Operating
Community Engagement
- Develop an understanding of the culture within the local community.
- Spend time in the community building relationships and assist volunteers transitioning into life in Zanzibar
- Be a champion of our cultural guidelines to upkeep African Impact’s reputation with the community.
- Support and guide all local members of staff to reach their goals and potential.
- Be a role model for volunteers and community members in all of your actions and behaviour

Reviewing – continuous improvement of project
- Continuously discuss project ideas/improvements with volunteers
- Gather feedback from volunteers, project partners and community members on what’s going well and not going so well on the projects
- Work with Project Teams to improve projects and respond to and integrate feedback from volunteers
- Write reports concerning weekly project activities, achievements and concerns
- Respond to emails from head office staff, volunteers and project partners
- Working to actively create a positive team environment.
- Constant communication to the Base Managers about any issues or project challenges.
- Contribute to the running of social media pages.
Skills and Experience
- Must be over 21 and hold a university degree
- Previous teaching/TEFL experience highly desirable
- Previous Experience of working in the volunteer/community development sector
- Have volunteered before (Africa preferred)
- A team player who’s interested in people, coaching and supporting volunteers
- Self-motivated, flexible, independent, adaptable
- Love of socialising with different types of people and mixed ages
- The ability to respect and work with different cultures
- A positive attitude and the ability to think on your feet
- Passionate about African Impact and sustainable development
- Fluency in English
- Strong communication skills – both written and verbal
Logistics:
- Full-time accommodation and meals are provided at the volunteer house
- One return flight will be reimbursed
- Stipend: dependent on experience
