Impact: Gender Equality
Across Africa, women and young girls face societal and cultural norms that disadvantage them from men. The victims of gender-based violence, economic vulnerability, social isolation and child marriages, an overwhelming amount of challenges often keep women in Africa from achieving their dreams.
For a community to experience positive development, gender equality and women’s rights promotion are essential. Throughout Africa, incredible NGOs and community-led organizations are working to support women impacted by the harms of gender inequality.

If you are interested in pursuing a career in social work, NGO management, human rights initiatives, or are simply passionate about empowering women; our gender equality internships are for you!
Our Gender Equality Internships start at $2,170 and increase depending upon which internship you join and your placement length. This cost covers your accommodation, meals, full-time African Impact in-country support, project and airport transportation, and full internship training and orientation.
As a commitment to sustainable development in the communities we work in, all interns pay an additional £20 to the African Impact Sustainability Fund. This money goes directly to the African Impact Foundation, which independently ensures the sustainability of our projects in local communities and guarantees impacts continue long after volunteers leave. We believe supporting female empowerment initiatives is an opportunity that should be accessible to all, regardless of your academic or professional experience! We generally do not require extensive knowledge or university education to join one of our Gender Equality Internships. In the past, we’ve welcomed everyone from those pursuing an undergraduate degree in social work, interns with experience in the NGO sector, and individuals passionate about women’s rights and eagerly exploring a career change!
At African Impact, we believe it is our responsibility to safeguard and protect communities’ wellbeing where we run projects. As such, we require all interns to complete a criminal background check before joining one of our internships. This requirement is firm and deeply rooted in our Child Protection Policy and stance on Responsible Volunteering.
Find out more about our Child Protection Policy, which outlines the strict guidelines all interns, staff and individuals at volunteer projects or internship programs where African Impact works with children must adhere to.
Absolutely! Possessing a university degree is not necessary to join us on one of these exciting internship programs. We regularly welcome interns from all walks of their educational journey, from students in the middle of their undergraduate degrees to seasoned professionals looking for a meaningful career change. Regardless of where you are in your academic and professional life, there is so much to gain from joining a Gender Equality Internship!
To us, offering the best international internships means providing each intern with all the help they may need to thrive in their placement. We give our interns full-time support throughout their internship, with regular access to three personal supports that will help you get the most out of your experience!
During your internship, you’ll work directly with a trained expert in the field of female empowerment. Your trained expert will enrich your experience by giving you a deeper understanding of the historical, social, and political challenges of women’s rights in African societies.
Additionally, you’ll meet regularly with a Professional Development Coach to discuss ways to achieve your personal and professional goals during your internship and beyond! Lastly, you’ll have the option to work with an Academic Trainer, who will help communicate any research you conduct into clear reports to contribute to female empowerment initiatives in your placement community long after you finish your project.
Joining a gender equality internship is an incredible way to gain professional experience in international development and impact women’s lives in a local community! Throughout your internship, you’ll be an integral team member of a local non-profit organization working to combat the gender inequalities that harm women in African societies. These are a few of the unique projects you can expect to participate in throughout your internship.
A key focus area during your internship will be leading women’s rights and female empowerment workshops! You’ll work with community members to educate women of all ages on six essential pillars: education, safety, health, early pregnancy, income generation and self-confidence. Running these educational workshops, you’ll engage in discussions with women struggling with gender inequality to discover sustainable and powerful ways in which they can take control of their future, pursue their dreams and live into their passions!
Focusing on the six pillars mentioned above, you’ll explore exciting internship opportunities to get creative and develop new, engaging programs in which NGOs can promote gender equality in local communities. Developing new programs is an excellent opportunity to use your unique imagination to discover innovation in the field of female empowerment! Working together with local community members and women, you’ll find new ways to expand the reach of female empowerment programs and unique opportunities for community engagement.
At African Impact, our mission is to provide the best international volunteer and intern experiences that create real, sustainable impacts on local communities. As an African-based organization, we live and breathe high-impact internships in Africa and are passionate about transforming the lives of both interns and local communities.
These aren’t your typical coffee-fetching internships. We’ll take you into the heart of gender equality work in local communities, where you will gain life-changing knowledge and experience in the field of international development. As an intern on one of our female empowerment programs, your work will directly support gender equality initiatives in powerful ways that will continue long after you leave your internship.

Gender Equality Internship Zambia
“I was stunned by the quality of the experience. The number of things that are quite literally at your fingertips to do in Livingstone and nearby is astounding. The coordinators of the projects here in Livingstone spend so much time getting to know your needs and helping you fit right into the project(s) you chose that you quite literally are contributing right away. I was helping teach and design lessons for a pretty powerful curriculum to empower young girls that hopefully inspired them, but truly empowered me.”
