Limuru, a quaint town nestled on the eastern rim of the Great Rift Valley, beckons with a charm that transcends its size. Just a short journey from Nairobi’s vibrant pulse, it offers a tranquil escape for volunteers steeped in rich history and natural splendour. Renowned as the cradle of Kenya’s thriving tea industry, Limuru’s verdant landscape unfolds in rolling hills carpeted with emerald tea plantations. Venture out of town and you will find the Great Rift Valley, the Maasai Mara and some of Africa’s best beaches down at the East African coast. Over the weekends, you can explore these sublime landscapes, get up close to Africa’s iconic wildlife in their natural ecosystem, and meet the Maasai community.

Medical Support

As a medical volunteer in Limuru, you’ll be placed at public and private hospitals and clinics, where your presence will be instrumental in supporting a dedicated medical team. These facilities, often bustling with patients and facing resource constraints, rely heavily on the invaluable assistance of medical volunteers. Fly into Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) on your Monday project start date. Please ensure your flight arrives between 6am and 10pm in order to join the complimentary transfer service to your accommodation. Look for the African Impact sign, and a friendly face will be there to welcome you!

Suswa Cottage is located at the Brackenhurst Hotel and Conference Centre in Limuru. Brackenhurst is situated on a 100-acre property with a restored, lush indigenous forest. Beautiful lush lawns within Brackenhurst offer peaceful spots to relax.

Accommodation

You will be staying in a comfortable, private cottage located on a 100 acre property surrounded by tea plantations and woodlands. The cottage has 3 bedrooms and shared bathroom facilities along with a kitchen and open plan lounge and dining area complete with comfy couches and fireplace providing ample space to relax in the evenings. The surrounding garden provides a peaceful spot to relax on warm African summer nights.

During the week, you will be provided with 3 meals a day. Breakfast is usually continental style lunch is usually taken on project, and dinner is served as a freshly cooked hot meal. Just a short walk away from the cottage, an all-day café serves up all the favourites as well as excellent wood-fired pizzas with an eclectic selection of toppings!

To keep in touch with family and friends back home during your volunteering in Kenya, complimentary Wi-Fi is available at the Brackenhurst estate. It is also very easy to purchase a Kenyan SIM card for additional data.

Climate

The wet season begins in November and goes on until May, but there are a couple of dry months in January and February. Days are often overcast, with showers in the afternoon, and chilly mornings with temperatures that hover around 13°C (55°F). The dry season is from June to October. You’ll enjoy warm weather during the day, although there may be a shower or two at times and cold weather at night. Limuru has a temperature of between 10–28 °C (75 °F) year-round.

Meet Neema Nyoike, our Volunteer Project Coordinator in Limuru. Neema was born and raised in the Githunguri constituency of Kiambu County, Kenya. Before joining this team, she devoted her time and efforts to serving at Mamlaka Hill Chapel Ruaka, where she found purpose in contributing to the well-being of others. She also volunteered with an organization focused on educating adolescent girls about STIs and empowering them to start their own businesses. During her free time, Neema finds solace in listening to musical melodies, and she often indulges her culinary creativity by cooking and baking. As she joins the organization, she is committed to continuous growth, learning, and wholehearted dedication to advancing its mission and objectives.
During your time as a medical volunteer, you’ll work alongside a diverse team of skilled healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, and practitioners, as well as interns from across the globe.

“If you’re trying to build your clinical skills as an undergraduate student (I did this after my second year of undergrad from North America), I think this program is amazing. You get to do hands-on things (learning to draw blood, vaccinate babies, etc.) if you assert yourself and get as involved as possible with the medical team. The volunteer coordinator (Neema) is super friendly and did a wonderful job both by checking in with us everyday, but also going out of her way to coordinate things like out-of-hours drives to the hospital (for a night shift which I did, for example). The accommodations are in the Brackenhurst conference center in the volunteer cottage. Great place and mosquito-minimal because of the high altitudes where you’re situated. Overall, I had a good time and gained wonderful experience. Would definitely recommend this program.”

If anything need to be sorted out, our project manager, Neema, was also very on top of making sure we all felt comfortable and heard in our struggles.It was my first time living alone, so that just in itself was a big experience. At a hospital, it is easy to understand what the aim of the project is and where to help and make an impact.
