Meet Neema Nyoike, our Volunteer Project Coordinator in Limuru. Neema was born and raised in the Githunguri constituency of Kiambu County, Kenya. Before joining this team, she devoted her time and efforts to serving at Mamlaka Hill Chapel Ruaka, where she found purpose in contributing to the well-being of others. She also volunteered with an organization focused on educating adolescent girls about STIs and empowering them to start their own businesses. During her free time, Neema finds solace in listening to musical melodies, and she often indulges her culinary creativity by cooking and baking. As she joins the organization, she is committed to continuous growth, learning, and wholehearted dedication to advancing its mission and objectives.

Recent Medical Volunteering in Kenya Reviews

Ranya Derrick30 UK

I feel so blessed to have come to Kenya! I felt safe and the on-site facilities were top notch. Being a Dr in The UK I wanted to challenge myself, how to practice with fewer resources, become more confident in my clinical ability and reignite my passion for medicine. I wanted an opportunity to give back. All those boxes were ticked and in fact, it exceeded these expectations. I left with new friends, new confidence clinically and personally and immense pride that I ACTUALLY DID IT! Looking after patients, being a birth partner, leading a medical unit in the community, seeing patients in the GP clinic - things I couldn’t have imagined I would do! African impact strike the best balance between work and play. We had plenty of time to immerse ourselves and explore the beautiful country of Kenya and have the best experiences! I would recommend this experience in a heartbeat!

If you’re trying to build your clinical skills as an undergraduate student (I did this after my second year of undergrad from North America), I think this program is amazing. You get to do hands-on things (learning to draw blood, vaccinate babies, etc.) if you assert yourself and get as involved as possible with the medical team. The volunteer coordinator (Neema) is super friendly and did a wonderful job both by checking in with us everyday, but also going out of her way to coordinate things like out-of-hours drives to the hospital (for a night shift which I did, for example). The accommodations are in the Brackenhurst conference center in the volunteer cottage. Great place and mosquito-minimal because of the high altitudes where you’re situated. Overall, I had a good time and gained wonderful experience. Would definitely recommend this program.

I spent 1 month alone at the volunteer base, however when new people started to arrive there was always a good atmosphere and good communication. If anything need to be sorted out, our project manager, Neema, was also very on top of making sure we all felt comfortable and heard in our struggles. It was my first time living alone, so that just in itself was a big experience. But being in a different country, with people with very different education, financial and religion backgrounds, was very refreshing. At a hospital, it is easy to understand what the aim of the project is and where to help and make an impact. I am also a med student, so I have worked at a hospital, before and the tasks where pretty similar. I always had the necessary help I needed to plan trips and activities on the weekends.

This program was life-changing, and my experience was amazing. From the staff, to the hospitals, to the orphanage, I loved every second. The program was perfect for a person like me, a recent high school graduate with some experience in the medical field who was interested in taking a gap year and would like to be a nurse. For those who are inexperienced like me, I was able to do so much and contribute so much, I think for more experienced people you would feel like you are less hands-on than usual, but still, you’re making a huge difference for the staff at the hospitals. I was able to deliver babies which was so amazing. The most impactful aspect was going to the children’s home, Fountain of Hope. The children changed my life and I will forever remember them and be supporting them, it’s so easy to love them.

I loved this experience! I have been looking to volunteer in Kenya for years and was waiting until I had enough education and experience before doing so. Once I arrived, I realized that there are opportunities for volunteering for everyone regardless of experience or education. Esther was amazing and provided excellence guidance. This is a great way to leave an impact in Africa!

Megan Froiland27, USA

This was hands-down one of the most impactful experiences of my life. Everything that was a part of this experience was wonderful, but the people made this experience life-changing. The project was so much more than just volunteering in the local hospitals—we had the opportunity to volunteer at many different projects throughout the community, all made possible by the Project Leader, Esther, and her wonderful connections and big heart! The experiences, the housing, the meals, the safety, the transportation, the communication, the organization of the project, and the friendliness of the staff were impeccable. This experience is one I will never forget, and I hope to participate again and return!
