Are you a keen photographer with a desire to make an impact? Join this NGO (non-governmental organization) photography project in South Africa. You’ll have the opportunity to enhance your photography skills, learn how to approach photography for nonprofit organizations, and document projects in the field. You will be guided by professional photographer Anna Lusty who has years of experience in both commercial and voluntary photography. You will be able to get involved with various organizations on a grassroots level, and a selection of your images will be donated to the non-profit initiatives you’ve documented, so that they can be used to raise awareness and funds.

Recent Reviews

Heidi HughesNonprofit Photography Project in South Africa

It was such an inspiring experience. I’ve definitely come a long way not only as a photographer but as a whole, the experience really enriched me on a personal level. The opportunity to photograph things that most people would never get the privilege of; walking into rural communities and truly feeling welcomed and wanted there, engaging with the local people was something that maybe initially felt a little bit daunting but turned into the best part! Faces and hugs I’ll never forget. It’s definitely made me think harder about what I want to do in the future.

Sunny WhippleNonprofit Photography Project in South Africa

This is an experience I’ll remember and will be of use to me for the rest of my life. I have no words! Personally, I learn best by experiencing things. Going out, getting my hands dirty and learning from my mistakes. Getting to spend two weeks working alongside a seasoned professional in such an incredible environment was truly something I thought I would only dream about.

Masato KimatiNonprofit Photography Project in South Africa

A big personal takeaway was learning to establish and build trust with your subjects and the people you work with. More than just the photography involved, I was really immersed with people's stories and how I would best portray them through my lens. In a sense, this enables me to have a greater internal purpose and obligation with my work. Having Anna Lusty as my mentor grew my photography skills and knowledge immensely over the span of three weeks. Her acknowledgement of my growth as a photographer made me very proud to have joined this program.

Vanessa EversNonprofit Photography Project in South Africa

Being there with Anna who works with nonprofits on a daily basis just solidified the fact that I need to follow in her footsteps in a way here in Canada. I was kind of living in a bit of a bubble for the past decade plus, and working in the communities and townships where there is so much need, beyond what I can even imagine, was really good for me. My bubble had burst and I needed that. There is so much need everywhere and if I can make even the slightest difference, then that is what I want to be doing.

Project FAQs

WHAT CAN I EXPECT TO LEARN AS AN NGO PHOTOGRAPHER?

A lot! Anna will help you sharpen your technical photography and post production skills. But mostly, and quite uniquely, you’ll learn the role photography plays in the nonprofit sector, and how to effectively document the work of an NGO. You’ll learn in theory and in practice, and you can expect to leave with an inspiring portfolio of images.

WHAT PHOTOGRAPHY EQUIPMENT DO I NEED TO BRING?

In general, we recommend an SLR camera, a range of lenses, and spare memory cards (or film) and batteries. Sometimes filters and tripods are recommended as well. It also helps to bring a computer with editing software.

Once you’ve booked, we’ll give you a document with detailed pre-departure information that will include a packing list. We’ll advise you on what clothes to bring, what practical gadgets you might need, and of course what photography gear we recommend.

WHO IS THIS PROJECT SUITABLE FOR?

Anyone with a passion for storytelling photography, a keen interest in documenting social impact work, a willingness to adopt a flexible approach, and a desire to learn.

DO I NEED TO BE A PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER TO JOIN?

No, but you do need to have SOME photography experience, a good camera, and basic knowledge of how to use your camera. The workshops you’ll receive are mostly focused on how to approach humanitarian photography specifically, so it’s ideal if you have foundational knowledge of how to take a good picture. We’re very happy to look at every application though!
