Overlanding Adventure FAQs
WHO ARE THESE TOURS SUITED FOR?
These overlanding trips are suitable for all volunteers and interns wanting to travel before, after or in between projects. You can expect people of all ages on these tours, however the average age group is between 20-45 for campers and 35-65 for accommodated guests. It’s important to make sure you have a higher fitness level if you are choosing a tour than including physical activity, like trekking with the gorillas.
WHAT IS THE ACCOMMODATION LIKE?
The accommodation varies on the trip you have chosen and availability. Some tours offer a choice of lodge accommodation or a camping option. The camping grounds are generally well equipped with bathroom facilities and other necessary amenities. All the meals on the tour are prepared by the crew.
SHOULD I CHOOSE SOUTHERN OR EAST AFRICA?
Southern Africa (South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique) tends to be more suited to tourists, and has adapted to its visitors needs ensuring that guests have an incredible all-round experience while visiting. English being widely spoken throughout all Southern African countries.
East Africa (Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda) is a more “rustic” experience, great for those who want an authentic African experience. It would not be uncommon to go without a hot shower or have shared bathrooms at times. East Africa is best known for the popularity of their National Parks and abundance of wildlife.
Accommodation standards vary between East and Southern Africa. Driving time and distance is generally a lot more in East Africa than it is in Southern Africa due to the conditions of the road and the distance between highlights.
WHAT VISAS DO I NEED?
The visa requirements vary considerably depending on your nationality, and the countries you are travelling through on your tour. Please be sure to check these details with our team when booking, to ensure you have a smooth transition at each border.
If your itinerary includes Mozambique and you require a visa, it’s best to apply for this before coming on tour, as this visa in particular takes a long time to process at the border. All visitors to Kenya need to pre-apply for their visas online at http://evisa.go.ke/evisa.html.
WHAT IS THE TRAVELLING TIME BETWEEN STOPS?
You can expect average speeds of approximately 80km/h in general, however there will be times where it’s necessary to reduce to speeds of 30km/h due to road conditions. In some areas you’ll spend many hours driving on unpaved/gravel roads.
Distances between highlights in Africa are often on a bigger scale than those at home, particularly in East Africa, which gives you a unique opportunity to see parts of the country and local life many tourists would not see on their trips. Most tours average approximately 350 km per day, but depending on the tour there can be stretches of up to 650km in a single day.
WILL THERE BE INTERNET CONNECTION?
The vehicles are not fitted with WiFi. There be stops that do offer WiFi, either complimentary or paid, but we cannot guarantee the availability of WiFi, the signal strength nor the reliability on the various routes.
The easiest option to keep in touch with your family and friends is to buy a SIM card of the respective country you are travelling in. Usually you can get SIM cards easily in major cities, and in sometimes vendors sell them at border posts. Please keep in mind though that there might not be reception in the some of the more remote areas that you will travel through.
