What Are Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as Global Goals, were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030.At our African Impact projects, we are proud to support 10 of the 17 Global Goals.

How We Support the SDGs

Global Goal 1
NO POVERTY

Our projects in Livingstone, Zambia and Zanzibar, Tanzania are geared towards providing early childhood development centres, hosting after-school clubs and teaching English, as well as developing entrepreneurial skills through adult literacy classes and income generation workshops.

ZERO HUNGER

African Impact projects in Livingstone, Zambia; Zanzibar, Tanzania and Cape Town, South Africa include focuses on malnutrition as well as nutritional education.

GOOD HEALTH & WELL-BEING

Through the provision of medical access and health care education, as well as focussing on the importance of sports and physical education – we support Global Goal 3 in Cape Town, South Africa and Livingstone, Zambia.

We work towards improving the quality of education alongside local community teachers, bringing the skills, expertise and passion of volunteers to life in Livingstone, Zambia; Zanzibar, Tanzania and Cape Town, South Africa.

GENDER EQUALITY

We enable girls to reach their full potential through sports development in Cape Town, South Africa, as well as Livingstone, Zambia and Zanzibar, Tanzania. In Livingstone, Zambia, we run the award-winning Girl Impact Project that tackles issues like sexual health, family planning, early pregnancy, self confidence and career advice.

Global Goal 6
CLEAN WATER & SANITATION

Our Waste Reduction & Ecobricking Project in Livingstone, Zambia is geared towards improving sanitation and water conditions for the local communities by conducting regular litter pickups, as well as educational workshops on the importance of recycling.

Global Goal 12
RESPONSIBLE CONSUMPTION & PRODUCTION

We reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse. The use of turning soft plastic waste in Ecobricks is a common practice in Livingstone, Zambia and the Greater Kruger Area of South Africa. In Zanzibar, Tanzania we regularly monitor fish market activities to educate against overfishing and catching of prohibited and protected species.

CLIMATE ACTION

Sustainable natural resource management, monitoring coral reef bleaching, tree-planting initiatives, stabilizing soil against erosion and removing alien invasive species that are “water thirsty” – we support Global Goal 13 in the Greater Kruger Area of South Africa; Livingstone, Zambia, as well as Zanzibar, Tanzania.

LIFE BELOW WATER

Through research, data capture and behavior monitoring, our Dolphin & Marine Conservation Project in Zanzibar, Tanzania aims to reduce human impact on the underwater environment. We also conduct research on coral reef bleaching, as well as monitoring seagrass meadows in the area.

Global Goal 15
LIFE ON LAND

The reduction of human impact to our natural environment is most notably achieved through anti-poaching activities (including wire and snare removals). We also focus on habitat restoration of protected areas in both the Greater Kruger Area of South Africa and Zanzibar, Tanzania.

How We Measure Our Impact

Our dedicated African Impact base teams, volunteers and interns methodically record the impact of their activities that relate to supporting the Global Goals, or SDGs. Whether weighing litter from beach pick-ups, measuring wires removed from reserves in the Greater Kruger or recording hours spent educating young girls and boys on gender equality – our fingers are on the pulse of our impact.
