Meet the African Impact Team in Zanzibar

Meet the Team

We’re here to welcome you

Our team lives and works in Zanzibar full-time, running the community programs year-
round and maintaining the hospital and clinic relationships that make your placement
possible.

Anny Ohlerth

Base Manager, PhD Researcher

Originally from Germany, Anny has lived on several continents over the past 15 years. Her passion for understanding foreign cultures and languages first led her to a career in science, and later to a love of development work. She has spent the past two years in Zanzibar, first as a volunteer, then as a volunteer coordinator, and now as Base Manager. Anny draws on her experience in intercultural collaboration and organization to keep the Zanzibar projects fulfilling and sustainable for everyone involved.

Suzy Mtera

Groups Coordinator

Suzy is originally from Arusha, in mainland Tanzania, and moved to Zanzibar five years ago. Dedicated to education, she has spent the past four years with African Impact’s Teaching Program. She holds a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certification and also enjoys teaching Swahili. Suzy has a special passion for working with the women in our community. Outside of work, you’ll usually find her with her two dogs, sewing something new, or listening to good music.

Amir Haji

Teaching Project Coordinator

Amir comes from Jambiani, the community where we live and work. His story reflects the success of our teaching project: more than a decade ago, he was a student in our adult English program. He went on to play professional football, then worked in development as an English teacher and project manager. Amir joined us in February 2024 to lead our teaching team, and he has been an inspiration to students and volunteers alike. He brings energy and thoroughness to every lesson, whether in the classroom or on the sports field.

Abdilatif (Duli) Abdalla

Teaching Project Coordinator

Born and raised in Jambiani, Duli spent three years studying linguistics in Dar es Salaam before joining African Impact in 2022 as a member of the teaching staff. Since 2024, he has served as Teaching Coordinator and Community Liaison. Duli always has an open ear for concerns from students, community members, and staff, and he approaches every situation with wisdom and patience. He also loves sharing fun facts about Swahili, English, and Arabic whenever the chance arises.

Ahmada Hashir

Marine Project Manager

Ahmada grew up in Stone Town, where a lifelong connection to the ocean inspired a career in marine conservation. He earned a B.Sc. in Aquaculture from Sokoine University of Agriculture and worked with African Impact from 2022 to 2023. After completing an M.Sc. in Environmental Studies at the State University of Zanzibar, he returned to the team in April 2026. Ahmada specializes in dolphin ecology, with a focus on bottlenose and Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins, and is dedicated to advancing research and conservation for the dolphin populations of Menai Bay.

Amour Ali

Marine Project Coordinator

Amour was born and raised just outside Stone Town, where a close connection to the ocean led him to explore marine conservation from an early age. He earned a B.Sc. in Marine Sciences from the Institute of Marine Sciences at the University of Dar es Salaam and joined African Impact in April 2026. With a background in fishing communities and experience as a data assistant, he enjoys combining fieldwork with data to understand the relationship between marine ecosystems and the people who depend on them. Outside of work, you’ll often find him swimming.
