Our Base
Welcome to Jambiani
Your base is in Jambiani, a village on Zanzibar’s southeast coast where life runs on the rhythm of the tides. Dhow boats sit on the horizon, the beach is a two-minute walk away, and local life continues alongside the volunteering, giving you a grounded sense of what day-to-day life in Zanzibar is actually like.
African Impact is well established here. The beach, local shops, schools, and football pitches are all close by, so it’s easy to settle in fast and balance your project with real downtime.
Life at the base
You’ll stay in air-conditioned, en-suite shared rooms with a maximum of three other volunteers. Linens, mosquito nets, and fans are all provided. There’s a swimming pool on site, along with several communal spaces where you can relax, study, or spend time with the rest of the group, close enough together to build a strong team dynamic, with enough space to unwind on your own when you need it.
On weekdays, three meals a day are freshly prepared by our local chefs, with dishes shaped by Swahili and East African cooking: rice, vegetables, fish, and seasonal ingredients. Dietary requirements can usually be accommodated with advance notice. Weekends are more flexible, and a good chance to eat out locally or explore nearby cafés and beach restaurants.
Your safety is a priority from the moment you arrive. You’ll get a full induction covering marine safety, health precautions, and emergency procedures, and when you’re working with local communities, we follow strict child protection policies and local customs. Our accommodation has 24/7 security, all staff are trained in first aid, and emergency support is available whenever you need it. If you’re getting around by bicycle, routes are predetermined for safety and gear is provided. Zanzibar is a place we’ve been able to run programs in safely for years, and this base is built to keep it that way.
