Zanzibar is as beautiful as it looks, and the work here is just as compelling. Our marine conservation project has monitored dolphins and coral reefs in Menai Bay since 2007, working alongside local marine scientists on research that feeds directly into how the area’s tourism is managed. A teaching program in Jambiani’s classrooms runs alongside it. We build custom-designed programs for university faculty and high school groups, and welcome individual volunteers and interns onto both, guided by qualified local and international staff, with the Indian Ocean as your backdrop.

Led by locals, supported by you. Our work in Zanzibar sits at the intersection of two things: a marine conservation research project that’s been running since 2007, and a teaching program that gives local nursery and adult learners more time and confidence with English.
Our work in Zanzibar centers on protecting the marine life of Menai Bay. Our team monitors dolphins and how they behave around tour boats, tracks fishing activity at local fish markets, and surveys the health of coral reefs and seagrass. We also train local boat operators in ethical dolphin tourism, and work with schools and communities through education and teaching. All of our data is shared with our project partner, marine scientist Dr. Narriman Jiddawi, to feed into further research on East Africa’s coastal waters. So far, 40 boat operators have trained with us in ethical tourism practices.
