Do You Want to Help Shape the Future of Young Learners?

Venture to South Africa, Zambia, or Zanzibar to soak up African cultures and make a lasting impact on local communities through education. As a volunteer teacher, you might find yourself as a teacher assistant at rural primary schools in Zambia, offering gender equality workshops in Zanzibar, or working with young and curious children at some of South Africa’s most under-resourced pre-schools in local townships. No matter what, volunteering as a teacher in Africa will contribute to sustainable education initiatives that uplift young children in underdeveloped communities.

The best decision I have ever made in my life was to volunteer with African Impact in the early childhood education program. The children, staff and other volunteers I met on this journey have made a huge impact on my life as I hope I did theirs. I would 10/10 recommend doing this and hope I can do it again some time in the future!

The experience provided what I was looking for and surpassed my expectations. African Impact organised the experience very well - in terms of making their own school (for adults), coming up with the curriculum / exams, and marketing it well so it’s well attended by locals, with the exams recognised by local businesses. As a teaching assistant I felt I had a positive impact on the students I taught, which I found quite rewarding. African Impact also were quite accommodating in providing a rounded cultural experience - through organising various different experiences (e.g. Q&A and dancing with local Maasai tribe). I found the base very comfortable, meeting all my needs, and the food was very good.

Did the teaching project in Zambia and from day one I felt that I had an immediate impact. It was amazing how driven and open the kids were. Even though I am fairly young (17), I felt as if I was able to find my role and actually lead classes. The people at the hostel and the managers were awesome to work with and made sure everything was safe and easy. I would certainly do this again if I had the chance.

I found that this was a really incredible way to experience the communities of Cape Town up close and personal. I’m so glad I decided to do this instead of touring. I met some really great people at the volunteer program who I believe I will stay in touch with, and I saw a side of Cape Town I wouldn’t have seen otherwise. This was well worth it and my only regret was not booking my trip for longer.

I had such a good time and felt so useful and fulfilled that I first prolonged from 5 to then 10 weeks, and now I'm already looking into how to return soon to Jambiani. From day one, I could tell that the project is run with a lot of love and roots in the community. The staff helped us volunteers ease into it a lot and were super kind and helpful to plan everything around work and free time. I hope to be back as soon as possible.

Teaching Volunteering FAQs

Do I need to be a qualified teacher to join teaching projects?

Our teaching and childcare volunteering projects do not require you to be a qualified teacher, nor does it require you to be a teaching student. You will be supporting established teachers by enriching their classrooms and finding exciting and engaging ways to support early childhood development. Your passion for young minds is all that is required to join our projects.

What kind of support will I receive as a volunteer teacher?

You’ll be welcomed into a supportive and collaborative environment! Our experienced program coordinators and local teachers will provide ongoing guidance, mentorship, and training throughout your volunteer teaching placement. They’ll be readily available to answer your questions, address any challenges you may face, and ensure you have a fulfilling and enriching experience.

Do I need to prepare any classes before I join a project?

You can certainly start gathering ideas of fun ways to enhance classroom activities, but it is not a prerequisite to come prepared. Your participation will give you access to a project rooms and weekly, you and fellow volunteers on the project will work on preparing for the following week. It is worthwhile bringing a laptop or tablet to assist you in your weekly class preparations.

Can I bring items to donate when I join these projects?

Absolutely! Once your booking is confirmed, our base team will be in contact with you. You will receive a list of items that we are always looking to gather from volunteers that can be donated to the schools and aftercare programs that we work with.
