Important Logistics and Ground Support

Everything you need to know about volunteering in South Africa in one place!

Flight Icon

Flights & Arrivals

South Africa has a number of International Airports. Depending on your chosen project you may be required to fly into Cape Town International, Johannesburg International, Port Elizabeth or Hoedspruit airports. Your project rates include a group shuttle service from the nearest airport to your accommodation. Most projects start on Mondays, either weekly or bi-weekly. Please refer to your chosen project page for more detailed information on which airport is best for you, as well as specific arrival details.

Location Icon

Locations

We offer a range of volunteer projects in South Africa, spanning from the Cape Town on the West Coast, right up to the Lowveld in the North-East part of the country. For more detailed information on your project location, please see your chosen volunteer or internship project page.

Meal Icon

Meals

Inspired and influenced by the multi-cultural diversity of the country, volunteers can expect a mix of Cape Malay, traditional African and western cuisines. It wouldn’t be a trip to South Africa without experiencing a traditional, open flame braai (barbeque) with pap and sous, shisanyama, curries and more. All of our programs cater for vegetarians, vegans and various food group intolerances with sufficient notice.

Communication Icon

Communication

South Africa has a number of different cellular network providers, for which SIM cards can be purchased from most shops or at any airport. Various packages allow for phone calls and/or data usage. All of our volunteer project locations offer free WiFi that enables you to make contact with home. Power and electricity supply can be intermittent in South Africa so do bring your power banks and embrace patience if you encounter an outage.

Climate Icon

Climate

South Africa’s long coastline (some 2,800 kilometers long) influences much of the climate. On the West Coast is the cold Atlantic Ocean, and the warmer Indian Ocean on the South and Eastern Coasts. Weather in this region of the Southern Hemisphere is climate and altitude dependent, which means this country is a perfect patchwork of warm coastal subtropics, hot deserts, humid highlands, snow-capped mountains and an enclave of Mediterranean weather in the southwest.

Recent South Africa Volunteer Project Reviews

Elle Wybrow, 23, UKSports Coaching & Development, Cape Town

I spent 5 weeks at African Impact doing sports and education coaching. I have loved everything about the scheme, from the children, the program and especially the staff. The African Impact charity is incredible and you can really see what a difference they are making to children’s lives. I felt so safe and welcomed the second I arrived at the accommodation and Mulenga has made this experience truly special by making us feel part of the family. The program is excellent and you get to teach a variety of schools with different ages and abilities which I have loved.

Steve Bredthauer, 72, USAWildlife Photography & Conservation, Greater Kruger

I greatly enjoyed my time as a photographer with African Impact. There were numerous morning, afternoon, and evening game drives that gave me ample opportunities for wildlife and bird photography. There was also chances with the research team for camera traps and conservation efforts. Free time on weekends allowed me to make trips to Kruger National Park. This program is highly recommended.

Myla van Halteren, 18, NetherlandsCommunity School Volunteer Project, Cape Town

I had a great time volunteering with African impact. There was enough structure to the program, but also enough freedom to express your own ideas. There was a lot of variation, there were different age groups that we were working with. And there were school and after school programs. I chose this program, because it was known for its ethical, responsible volunteering. I can say that from what I’ve seen that is true. African Impact puts the child first, as it supposed to be. My Volunteer Coordinators did not only make the experience more fun but they also ensured that we learned about the community we were working in. The staff overall were very friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend volunteering here.

Paloma Sanz de Santamaria, 19, ColombiaCommunity School Volunteer Project, Cape Town

The experience in a whole was wonderful, the schools we worked with, our helpful instructors, the friendships we made with the other volunteers, and the bonds we made with the children on project. It was a very enjoyable experience going to projects but also the living arrangements were comfortable and all the staff were very caring and attentive to our needs.

Keri Petrilli, 51, USAAfrican Big 5 Wildlife & Conservation, Greater Kruger

My experience volunteer experience with African Impact has been amazing! The staff made me feel like part of the African Impact family. I learned something new everyday. The volunteers were welcoming and excited to get to know you. The staff has created a positive culture. I appreciated that they emphasized to ask them anything. No questions are dumb. I would love to come back.
