Livingstone, Zambia is a beautiful, rural town that many call “the real Africa.” Just a stone’s throw away from one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World – Victoria Falls – Livingstone is the ultimate playground for those who love adventure sports, wildlife, and the great outdoors. There are many national parks where you can observe lions, rhinos, hippos, crocodiles, elephants, and giraffes, and often, we spot some of these animals along the road on our way to project!

You’ll be staying in the heart of Livingstone at a private volunteer house within the popular and vibrant Victoria Falls Backpackers Zambia. This comfortable backpackers’ is 15 minutes from Victoria Falls and is a 5 minute walk from Livingstone’s town centre which has many stores and a great selection of cafes and restaurants for you to explore at weekends.

You will receive three fresh and delicious meals a day cooked by local chefs during the week. For breakfast you can expect cereal and toast, along with a cooked option such as eggs, pancakes or French toast. Lunch could be a wrap, pizza or sandwich paired with a fresh crispy salad. For dinner you might have a pasta dish, curry with rice or an authentic stew. Vegetarian options are available and we can cater to most dietary requirements. At weekends you will have access to the kitchen to make your own food, though most volunteers choose to visit local cafes and restaurants. Café Zambezi makes great traditional Zambian food and is a favourite amongst locals, while Maramba River Lodge is a popular spot for sundowners and Fez Bar is a popular place to hang out with locals and do a little dancing in the evenings!

To keep in touch with family and friends back home, Victoria Falls Backpackers has complimentary WiFi for you to use during your stay. You can also purchase a SIM card with data bundles if you wish.

FACILITATION OF PROJECTS

Many of the communities we work in suffer from a lack of government funding towards education, healthcare and social services. Many people battle with poverty and the effects of the HIV epidemic, as well as huge unemployment rates. There is a dire need of medical assistance, education, and empowerment for vulnerable populations like youths and pregnant mothers, as well as a need for job creation. It is important for interns to see first-hand the communities we assist; you will spend time on our projects, getting to know our fantastic community partners and enhancing relations. You can expect to run workshops in the communities we partner with to leave your impact and receive a better, in-depth understanding of our projects. Your working week will be split between office time and community engagement.

FUNDRAISING AND MARKETING

As a charity, a large portion of the Foundations time is dedicated towards fundraising and donor relations. You will be involved directly with the management of donations and the supervision of the implementation of all funds. This will include all financial aspects, including the monitoring, evaluation, and reporting on all donations.

You will also be responsible for raising awareness and organising fundraising initiatives for the African Impact Foundation at your chosen destination. This will include, deciding upon fundraising priorities, creating a fundraising plan, combining social media and marketing to get more people involved in your fundraising campaigns and planning fundraising events. This activity not only develops your communication skills, but also your ability to present information in a succinct manner that is attractive to donors. Depending on your skills, you may also assist with the writing of grant proposals.
