Volunteer in South Africa
Eager to start your South African volunteer adventure with us? Here’s what you need to know.
Where can I volunteer in South Africa?
The country, which African Impact proudly calls home, South Africa is truly a destination unlike any other. There are endless adventures to be had across our beautiful country, a nation filled with unique communities, landscapes, and cultures. Here are a few of the places you can volunteer in South Africa with us!
Cape Town, South Africa
Highlighted by the stunning backdrop of Table Mountain, Cape Town is regularly considered one of the world’s most beautiful cities. It’s not difficult to understand why – with breathtaking landmarks like Lion’s Head Peak and the Cape of Good Hope, Cape Town is painted with gorgeous displays of nature around every corner.
A beautifully multicultural city, Cape Town celebrates an array of traditional and modern African cultures, as well as international influences, creating a uniquely South African community. From the colourful streets of Bo-Kaap to Clifton and Muizenberg’s trendy beaches, Cape Town has a variety of lively neighbourhoods that give the city its iconic charm.
Most notably, however, is Cape Town’s powerful and influential history. Home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Robben Island – where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison – Cape Town is a historic location in South Africa’s long walk to freedom from apartheid. With renowned museums and historical sites throughout the city, learning about South Africa’s history of racial discrimination and the equality work that remains to be done is essential for any visitor exploring Cape Town.
Greater Kruger Area, South Africa
When it comes to incredible wildlife encounters in South Africa, the Greater Kruger Area is simply unparalleled. Sharing a fenceless border with the iconic Kruger National Park – often considered one of the best game parks for wildlife viewing in Africa – the Greater Kruger Area is a sprawling expanse of over 20 private game reserves.
This exclusive region allows travellers to embark on exhilarating game drives throughout the African bush to experience up-close encounters with some of the area’s most iconic wildlife. Roaming freely from the Kruger National Park, travellers in the Greater Kruger Area can expect to see Africa’s big five – lions, leopards, rhinos, buffalo and elephants – among other stunning wildlife, without the crowds that often fill the neighbouring national park.
The Greater Kruger Area is a hub for some incredible conservation efforts that aim to protect South African wildlife. Travelling to this stunning region means embarking on endless wildlife conservation adventures that are as impactful as they are exciting. If you are looking to experience Africa’s wildlife in an authentic, impact-driven setting, the Greater Kruger Area is the ultimate destination for you!

How will you be helping by volunteering in South Africa?
Community Development Programs
Beginning in 1948, the law of apartheid came into effect in South Africa. Apartheid – which means “apartness” in Afrikaans – was a discriminatory social and political system that ensured legal segregation and discrimination against non-white South Africans. While apartheid laws legally came to an end in the 1990s, there still exists substantial socioeconomic inequality among South Africans today.
According to a United Nations report conducted in December 2020, almost one in five South Africans live in extreme poverty. Beyond this, South Africa is considered one of the world’s most unequal countries, according to the UN Human Development Index. Highlighting the devastatingly significant inequalities among South Africans in domains such as income, life expectancy, education, and gender inequality, much work remains unfinished in creating a free and equal South Africa.
When you volunteer in South Africa with us, you’ll work to support sustainable development in local communities and combat the immense inequalities that still exist today. Working closely with locals together, you’ll support community projects that tackle some of the developmental issues that impair many South African’s abilities to achieve economic, social, and academic equality. By volunteering in disadvantaged communities, your work will be integral to supporting the positive development of residents of all ages, from young children to grown adults.
Across Africa, wildlife is under intense threat. Negative interactions with humans and environmental dangers like climate change have put South Africa’s impressive species in a precarious situation, with many at risk of extinction within the century. From the Black Rhino to the African Elephant, Africa’s iconic wild residents could face devastating consequences if we do not act now.
When you join us as a wildlife conservation volunteer in South Africa, you’ll work to support sustainable conservation efforts that put the lives of African wildlife and communities first. Embarking on game drives into the heart of the African bush, your volunteer work will focus on conducting valuable field research on the local wildlife’s health, behaviour, and populations. This research will be integral to informing conservation decisions in the area, ensuring long-term wildlife preservation aims across the Greater Kruger Area are met in the best way possible. With opportunities to make a difference in various conservation settings, from Wildlife Photography programs to research-focused Conservation Internships, we have a wildlife conservation project that suits your needs, interests, and the adventures you’d like to check off your bucket list!
How much does it cost to volunteer in South Africa?
Our South African volunteer programs start at $1145 and increase depending on which project you join and how long you volunteer with us. African Impact Sustainability Fund
As a commitment to sustainable development in the communities we work in, all volunteers pay an additional $25 to the African Impact Sustainability Fund.
