More about the African Cheetah Rehabilitation in South Africa

    About the Cheetah Rehabilitation Centre:
The cheetah breeding and reintroduction centre is based near Parys in South Africa (100 km south of Johannesburg). It is situated in a 1000-hectare reserve, bordering the Vaal River. It is home to a large number of antelope species as well as white rhino, giraffe and zebra.
Work with the captive-bred cheetahs began in 2001 and during the past three years 16 cheetahs have been bred and raised with 100% success. Due to the rapidly declining numbers of cheetah in the wild, we have realised that further action needs to be taken to address this problem. The centre aims to do this with a three-phase project, which will see cheetahs released into managed environments, which are closer to their natural habitat.

    About the Volunteer Programme:
You are invited to join in the work at the centre with the beautiful cheetahs, and help save this incredible species. The volunteer programme is designed to introduce you to the fascinating world of African wildlife as well as the incredible cheetah, and to work closely in all aspects of reserve management. We are also able to offer you the chance to work on the reintroduction project, where you will be actively helping in reintroducing cheetahs back into their natural habitat. You will be playing a vital role in raising and teaching the cheetahs (from the age of three months) to prepare them to hunt for themselves, so that the goal of contributing to increasing the numbers of free-roaming cheetahs again can be realised.

Day in the life...

This is a typical day in the life of a volunteer working on the African Cheetah Rehabilitation project:

While we have a routine in place, our timetable is fairly fluid and we do expect all participants to be reasonably flexible about the scheduling.
Here is an example of a typical day of a volunteer at the cheetah programme:
7 – 8:30am: Cleaning the cheetah enclosures and running the cheetahs to exercise them and to provide stimulation and enrichment
    8:30 – 9:15am: Breakfast
    9:15 – 9:30: Volunteer meeting
9:30 – 1pm: Morning duties, which could be a game count, a boundary patrol or the removal of alien invader plant species
    1 – 2pm: Lunch
2 – 4pm: Afternoon duties, which could be reserve maintenance, working with the cheetahs or creating firebreaks
    4 – 5pm: Cheetah feeding
5pm onwards: Free time; a time to socialise and eat dinner. We may also do night drives or other activities during this time.

We are committed to ensuring you have the best possible time at the project and your health and happiness is of the utmost importance to us.

Upon arrival you will be fully briefed and trained in all appropriate areas. You will be introduced to all members of staff and given a full tour of the reserve. You will be shown where all the tools and equipment are, and briefed exactly how to use them. You will not be expected to carry out any duties without the appropriate training and supervision.
You will also be given more information on our reintroduction project and the plight of the cheetah, so that you fully understand just how important your work here is.

Accommodation

You will be staying in a specially designed volunteer house, which is very comfortable and cleaned on a regular basis and is situated near one of the reserve’s rivers. There is a games room, and several areas to relax and socialise in, such as an outdoor braai (BBQ) area.
Internet and telephone access will be provided for a small additional cost.
There is also a swimming pool and sun loungers so that you can work on your tan during your free time!

Meals

Coffee, tea and cool drinks are available throughout the day and snacks are also sold in our shop. You will be given a substantial breakfast, as we believe this to be the most important meal of the day.
