How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

Work & Impacts

Hiv education

Vocational Skills Training

Volunteers lead English lessons and workshops with vulnerable girls who have escaped poverty. African Impact offers girls from poor communities the opportunity to study vocational skills for the booming tourism sector in the Kilimanjaro Region. Volunteers aim to increase the level of English of these girls, as well as facilitating workshops which look at building confidence, computer literacy, CV and resume writing, and setting career goals, to name just a few.

Girls afterschool club

Girls After-School Club

Volunteers support girls who have escaped female genital mutilation and/or forced marriage and also teach English when the students are on school holidays. This extra language support helps the girls a great deal in school – ensuring girls stay in school for longer and that they get better grades. Volunteers also hold workshops which look at life skills such as career planning, health, nutrition and family planning. Volunteer explore these themes through debates, presentations and role-plays to ensure the students are engaged.

Youth empowerment clubs

Youth Empowerment Clubs

Working with the Project Coordinator, volunteers will facilitate fun and active sessions for young girls and boys in after-school clubs. You will explore social issues at large in the local community, including early pregnancy, unemployment and crime. By discussing how these issues affect both girls and boys in this under-resourced community, volunteers can look at what young people can do to escape and combat these issues.

Womens group

Women's Group

Work with widows and single mothers in a women’s support group. Support our women’s group by leading sessions which look at social issues which affect girls and women in their community. Empower the women’s group members through education so they can be role models and agents of change for other girls in their community.

Community research

Community Research

Carry out research into issues affecting girls in our local community by working along side project staff to conduct group discussions and surveys. The outcomes of these group discussions and surveys will contribute to the growth of the Girl Impact project in our community. Areas of research will address the following issues including; education, health, early pregnancy, safety, income generation and confidence.

And more...

Volunteers get a diverse experience here in Moshi. As well as the core projects listed above volunteers also carry out other activities including:

  • Creating a social media campaign which advocates to the global community the importance of girl empowerment.
  • Volunteers also leave their mark by doing more manual jobs such as painting classrooms and educational murals to encourage the students to learn even during play time!

About Moshi Tanzania

About moshi tanzania

About the Destination

Mt Kilimanjaro is one of the most iconic attractions in the whole of Africa, the Continent’s highest peak and nestling at its base is the busy tourist town of Moshi; a bustling network of food markets and restaurants, where one can’t escape the ‘catchy’ Swahili music of the locals… and don’t forget the goats who will regularly stop the traffic!

As well as being in awe of the different colours, smells and sounds in Moshi, you can’t help but notice the incredible variety of cultures and specifically that of the Masai people, colourfully dressed in their traditional ‘Warrior’ clothing and brandishing some of the most impressive jewellery. The Masai are gentle people who live very traditional lives and you will get the life-changing opportunity to spend time with these tribes, dancing, drumming, tasting their food and begin to understand the vibrant culture of these unique people.

Living just a short drive away from Moshi, you will spend your time volunteering in the rural village of Mdawi, in an exclusive fully furnished volunteer house with plenty of outdoor space to enjoy nights spent under the stars (and trust me, you’ve never seen so many!) and opportunities for you to interact with and bond with the local villagers.

As well as hosting some of the friendliest and welcoming people in Africa, you can’t come to Tanzania and not experience its other locals… the wildlife. With monkeys in the trees and lizards sunning themselves on the rocks in your garden, living here is a perfect balance between integrating with the Tanzanians and enjoying the spectacular nature the unforgettable country offers. Why not catch the Great Wildebeest Migration at the world-famous Serengeti Park? Or see herd after herd of wild elephants from a hot air balloon drifting along the plains?

If it’s even greater adventures you’re after, how about trekking up Kilimanjaro? I can assure you after volunteering in its awesome shadow it will definitely be on your mind!
