South Africa Visas
Entry permits are issued free on arrival to visitors on holiday from most Commonwealth and most EU countries, as well as the United States.
Passport holders that are not entitled to entry permits will need to get a visa before they arrive.
South Africa also issues special volunteering permits that are valid for up to 6 months.
South Africa Health, Vaccinations, HIV/AIDS & Drinking Water
Malaria -
Malaria prophylactics recommended by your personal physician are necessary if you will be in a Malaria area in South Africa (mostly the Eastern and Lowveld regions). As well as insect repellent and covering yourself up with long trousers and light cotton long-sleeved shirts in the evenings.
Vaccinations -
Hepatitis A, Polio, Typhoid
Vaccination against yellow fever is mandatory if travelling from an infected area, and recommended even if you are not. Be sure to have your vaccination record of yellow fever with you when you arrive.
HIV/AIDS -
HIV/AIDS is a risk and it is recommended that you take all the necessary precautions.
It is not necessary to drink bottled water in South Africa.

South Africa Weather & Climate
- South Africa has a very welcoming and fairly diverse climate.
- Towards Zimbabwe and Mozambique you will experience a typically tropical climate: high temperatures and high levels of humidity.
- The Cape coastal region has a Mediterranean-type climate with high temperatures in summer (October-March) and fairly warm and very wet winters (May-August).
- Eastern coastal areas such as near Durban have their wettest months in October and April and experience both high temperatures and high humidity.
- Central/Eastern areas around Johannesburg experiences warm but rainy summers and remarkable drops in temperature during the winter nights and early mornings. They also have pleasantly low humidity levels.
