More about the Rural Schools- Teaching and Work in South Africa
The Community Schools’ Program
Rural and village schools - Computer literacy Programme:
Computer Literacy is only in its infancy in the Wild Coast region. Working from an established course framework, volunteers are part of developing a module of appropriate teaching resources for future use in computer literacy courses in rural South Africa.
Ultimately the programme works towards:
1. Equipping rural and peri-urban schools with computers (a multi-phase project)
2. Continued development of appropriate teaching aids and support structures for both teachers and learners
3. Meeting learning criteria by teaching computer literacy through reading, maths and the sciences
4. Developing Environmental learning and applied competencies through sustainable technology and life skills
Sport Development:
• The 32°South sport’s initiative is an exciting drive to introduce and develop on-going growth and appreciation in the sporting arena in socio-economically challenged areas of the Wild Coast. In a country such as South Africa, sport is able to encourage not only a healthy lifestyle, but also develop necessary social skills and peer understanding that is essential to the stability and well being of our society.
• Sport will also provide 32°South with the medium through which contact with the youth can be developed into an educational forum where HIV aids and STD’s will be addressed in the future.
• Volunteers are implementing and further developing a formal sport programme in both a rural farm school and a township setting. The sport programme includes the teaching of sports in a new and exciting structure, teamwork, sport etiquette and encouraging a healthy approach to lives often faced with massive social and economic challenges.
Wildlife and Conservation Project:
• Inkwenkwezi Conservation Initiative now offers volunteers a unique conservation opportunity to work on one of the Eastern Cape’s premier privately owned wildlife reserves. On horseback, foot and 4x4 you will work in a team with committed and qualified managers and participate in a diverse range of conservation work.
• The proximity of the reserve to the ocean further enhances a holistic experience as volunteers will explore and learn about marine and coastal ecology.
• The Inkwenkwezi initiative also has a community development project, aimed at enriching the lives of children resident at a local school where they work on a project of improvement at the school once a week.
Participants will therefore not only have hands on experience of the African wildlife and ecosystems, but also of the cultural diversity of South Africa.
“As conservationists we live in a world with numerous challenges and daunting odds. However, we all share responsibility for the wise use of our resources and for the conservation of the diversity of ecosystems and species. It is this extraordinary diversity that makes Africa such a vibrant place to live in and to visit. You cannot love what you do not know. Come and learn to share our passion for conservation here at Inkwenkwezi Conservation Initiative and experience the depth and scope of the challenge facing environmental conservation in Southern Africa.”
