VOLUNTEER NAME Steven Heritage
COUNTRY Canada
PROJECT Mozambique Rural Pre-School and Community Project
DATES AT PROJECT November 2007

PLEASE EXPLAIN YOUR TRUE FEELINGS ABOUT YOUR TIME WITH US

I can’t tell you enough how fulfilling this experience was. Volunteering with African Impact truly was exactly the experience I had hoped it would be. At no time did I find myself wishing the experience was different from what it was.

VOLUNTEERING HIGHLIGHTS

It’s funny, I arrived being excited about the building projects, but quickly found it was the time spent with the kids, either teaching kids or playing at the orphanage that I truly enjoyed the most. The soccer was really rewarding too, but the little guys were just too fit :)

HOW HAS LIVING IN AFRICA FOR THIS PERIOD INFLUENCED YOUR OUTLOOK ON LIFE

I went to Africa with this predetermined sympathy for the people and the environment they find themselves in. With in short order I found that we, in the western world could learn from the people of Vilanculos. They had a sense of community that made the society I live within seem impersonal, if not lonely. I also found that we are so incredibly wasteful in comparison to the people I met there. Granted it is probably not by choice on their behalf, but still noticeable.

LATEST UPDATE FROM OUR PROEJCT MANAGER

“Our most recent development is that we have been working at a rural pre-school with children between three and seven years old, which has become our main volunteer project and is a hit with all our volunteers! A normal day consists of registration, singing songs, doing craft work, and playing sports. Each day has a theme such as the letter A Day, Blue Day or Music Day. Our aim is to develop the teaching standards and basic learning methods, and to prepare the children for higher education. We are also turning the school - a cyclone-damaged, sad looking building - into a bright, waterproof and inspiring place. We have also had an addition to our staff – we welcomed Jude Bore, who, with her teaching experience and ability to speak Portugese, has already proved to be a great asset to our team.”
