Dear Friends
The last month has been a landmark in the history of the African Lion Rehabilitation and Release into the Wild Programme by the African Lion Environment and Research Trust (ALERT). On August 29th we released a pride of two males and five females into our first ever stage two site. I am very happy to report that the pride are doing very well and have resolved some early issues about each individuals place in the pride. Just before dawn on the 4th day the pride killed an eland, Africa’s largest antelope, and gorged themselves for 48 hours. You can read the ongoing story of the lions’ release in our stage two update.
The lions in stage one of the release programme aged 15 months to 2.5 years also had a very successful past month of hunting, managing to make nine kills in August, ranging in size from a rabbit to a buffalo!
Following a recent visit to the programme to attend the stage two release, Sir Ranulph Fiennes, described in the Guinness Book of Records as the ‘world’s greatest living explorer’ has kindly agreed to become a patron of ALERT UK. We thank him for his support.
Kindest regards,
David Youldon
ALERT Chief Operating Officer

I am in admiration of the work being done at Antelope Park and feel honoured to have been involved in it. I think there are many challenges to come but with the obvious dedication of the staff and volunteers involved, the rehabilitation program will succeed in increasing the African lion population and gain respect from the necessary organisations and individuals.
