Voluntourism Africa – Overlanding with more of a purpose than pub hopping! Newsletters » March/April 2007 » Voluntourism Africa We’re realising more and more the value of group expeditions - moving a number of dedicated passengers through community development initiatives means that we find ourselves having been able to re-build a clinic or school and really make a difference to local infrastructures and communities in a relatively short space of time. The beauty of teamwork! Expeditions are a great form of “voluntourism” for those of you who don’t necessarily have the time to go on a longer static volunteer placement and are keen to see as much of a particular country as you can. These trips are an amazing way to make friends, experience a local country and culture in a dramatic way, and for you to really leave your mark on Africa. This year we’ve put together 4 amazing Africa voluntourism trips in Southern and East Africa and we’d love to have you on board! Africa Volunteer Expeditions for 2007 Kenya-Uganda, Nile River, Building and Maasai Mara Migration Expedition 2 – 24 July 2007 Join our specialized overland team and other adventurers as we head East from Nairobi with our fully equipped overland vehicle, through Lake Naivasha National Park and then across the border into Uganda. We will be based near Jinja, the enigmatic source of the River Nile and your home for the next 10 days whilst our team will be re-building and refurbishing local rural schools and village facilities. From Jinja you will return to Kenya and continue South to the Maasai Mara where our group will camp amongst Big 5 and hopefully await sightings of the start of the Great Migration Kenya Camel Trek, Maasai Mara Migration Safari and Building Expedition 30 July – 21 August 2007 Join a group of other intrepid travellers as you venture out on a Camel Trek through wildlife and wilderness areas straddling the equator at the heart of Kenya’s Rift Valley Province. Along with our African Impact team you will then be involved in the refurbishment of a local Maasai village school, and base for the Nomadic Communities Trust Mobile Camel Clinic near the village of Londongokwe. After this building project in Samburuland on the banks of a local river, take in the sights of Lake Nakuru’s famous cloud of flamingos, and wildlife population, and follow on to the Maasai Mara for the start of the Great Migration. Kenya Camel Trek, Big 5 Safari and Building Expedition 27 August – 17 September 2007 Join other adventurous travellers as you travel out to Kenya’s famous Lake Naivasha before setting off on a Camel Trek through wildlife-filled plains of Samburuland, the vast plateau North West of Mt. Kenya, straddling the equator at the heart of Kenya’s Rift Valley Province. Along with our African Impact team you will then be involved in the assistance of a rural community by building a bridge across a local river that when flooded cuts off medical assistance to several surrounding rural villages. Following the building work you will go on a 5 day safari for encounters with the Big 5. Photographic Safari / African Wildlife Photography Course 7 - 14 July 2007 Join renowned South-African photojournalist Christopher Scott and explore the Victoria Falls, Chobe National Park (Bostwana, home of Africa’s highest elephant populations), local community programmes in Livingstone and our Lion rehabilitation programme in September 2007. Christopher will be giving a series of lectures and practical photographic presentations over a series of 8 days. This is the ultimate Photographic Safari / African Wildlife Photography Course. Zimbabwe National Parks Big 5 Conservation Experience 4 departures per year - see below Your 8 week expedition will take you behind the scenes into 3 of Zimbabwe’s most stunning National Parks and to Antelope Park – home to our world-first lion breeding and rehabilitation project. Along with our experienced African Impact project managers, professional guides and the assistance of our consultant Drs of Ecology and Zoology we have developed a very unique and special programme that will contribute directly and significantly towards conservation in Zimbabwe, and research objectives on an Africa-wide scale. You will have the opportunity to immerse yourselves in conservation management and wildlife assistance, increase your knowledge of African bush and cultures through our first week Pathfinders Cultural Familiarisation and Bush Awareness course.  You will also visit some of Zimbabwe’s premier tourist spots including the Victoria Falls, and walk with lions at our breeding and rehabilitation programme at Antelope Park in the Zimbabwe Midlands.
