About the Cape Town Street Kids and Community Programme volunteer project

Feedback from Georgia Neath, Cape Town community programme volunteer August 2006. My time in Cape Town “has shown me insight into other peoples lives that I had never seen before and showed me to what extent poverty can affect peoples lives, particularly those of the childrens. I has also shown me that things can be done to help and change these situations, no matter how small.”

Why volunteer for the Cape Town Street Kids and Community Programme Experience?

This programme involves various aspects of community work and development. We support a number of different community development initiatives. Our aim is to provide you with a diverse and varied experience, which will allow you insights into various facets of life of underprivileged individuals in Cape Town. You will have the opportunity to be involved in the following programmes:

  • An Orphanage to 24 Refugee children ranging from 6-19 years of age. Most of the refugee children come from Central Africa (The Congo, Angola and Zimbabwe)
so speak either French or Portuguese as their first language. On Monday to Thursday afternoon you will be assisting these children with their homework, reading or school projects.  Often you will find yourself helping on a one on one basis, depending on your educational background.  These children are very grateful for any help you provide them and they take their education very seriously. As you work so closely with these children you will find it easy to establish a long lasting friendship.
  • Womens’ shelter: The establishment that we are involved with seeks to provide shelter and support for pregnant, abused and homeless women with children; through an holistic self empowerment programme that develops social, personal, creative, vocational skills within a framework of Christian values and discipline and a culture of mutual learning, accountability and respect for the unique value of every human being.
  • You will be assisting the child carers in looking after children whilst their mothers attend workshops and life skills training sessions that are essential aspects of their rehabilitation and sustainability.
  • Volunteers work with the following age groups: infants up to 1 year; toddlers from 1-3 years and crèche with children from approx 3 – 5 years old.
  • Learn to Live: a school and skills development centre for young boys. Volunteer involvement includes teaching, metal work/ woodwork/ leather work instruction, dance, drama, homework supervision and more.
  • Project Childhood
Your involvement with Project Childhood will be approximately 2 mornings a week and will also be at your personal preference. This programme requires a lot of initiative and preparation from volunteers as it has little structure of its own. We have a resource library of ideas and information that volunteers will have at their disposal to prepare for their time with the SAP kids if they wish.
