Enclosures washed away in the Boxing Day floods; new vets who
have joined us as full-time consultants; Ashanti and Kenge on the
mend; and with the rains came our newest cub, Amanzi...
New Lion Cub at Antelope Park - Amanzi
Before we say anything else, let us talk about who arrived with
the recent wet weather...
Amanzi is Shona for ‘water’. Teddy and Anna’s
newest litter was born at the beginning of March. Largely due to
the excessively wet and chilly weather 3 cubs were soon reduced
to one brave Amanzi. He is currently residing with Mr and Mrs Conolly
and although he had a rough start he’s being true to his lion
nature, and is coming along just fine.
Lion Enclosures - Waterfall washed away & breeding
enclosures grow!
Just after boxing day heavy rains set in and literally washed
away the whole Waterfall enclosure, it was a sight to see and to
top it off the 4M’s were in it! Lucky the cubs climbed the
highest point and stayed until someone came to the rescue. At the
moment volunteers and builders are busy constructing the enclosure
again away from the river while the 4M’s are in the Leopard
enclosure in the breeding programme.
There have also been some massive enclosure construction at the
breeding programme. We now have a pathway trap system put in place
were lions can walk through easily from one enclosure to the next
for cleaning purposes as well as shifting lions around, it’s
a very good system. The idea was taken from the Wild Dog Project
in Hwange which also has a similar tunnel trap system although their
tunnels lead to the vet department for any treatment the dogs might
need. Speaking about vets...
Vets taken on as full-time consultants
Keith Dutlow and Lisa Marabini from Harare have agreed to become
the consulting veterinarians for African Encounter. They will therefore
be consulting for Antelope Park, Lion Encounter Zim, Lion Encounter
Zambia and other African Impact Programmes. Their service would
cover all the animals at AP and they are prepared to become involved
in any African Impact work in National Parks and on private land.
We believe that this is a major step forward for all conservation
programmes. Both Keith and Lisa have dangerous drugs licenses and
we believe that AE would provided them with an opportunity to be
involved in variety of wildlife work, which is what they would like
to do. They are coming on the 27th February 06 for a visit to see
what we could do about some of our sickly lions…
Ashanti happy and healthy again
About a month ago Ashanti started to show signs of imbalance,
she had no strength. It was a sad sight especially because a few
months before she was fine. A volunteer took a urine sample ready
to be taken to a well-known vet, Dr Stevenage in Bulawayo. The Dr
said it was Vitamin A and to give the cub the quantity prescribed
and see if there are any results, if not then we would have to put
her down and proceed with an autopsy to get to the bottom of the
problem. THANKFULLY, that never happened. After the first day of
Vitamin A tablets she showed remarkable recovery and today both
Ashanti and Arielle are back to walking with clients and volunteers,
they still get their dose of vitamin A but the results are fantastic.
Another success story.
Kenge under observation
Also seems to have some stiffness in the body and is also currently
taking some medication. We are all waiting for the arrival of the
vets to what they have to say as their experience in wildlife management
is quite diverse and we are hoping for good results.
Stage 1/1B/2/3 Progress
As mentioned above, there have been discussions to start building
a 500 acre Stage 1B at Antelope Park in the far North/Western part
of the property. The 500 acres will have an abundance of game for
the lions to survive on, surrounded by 4 other enclosures with a
rotational system put in place. We are busy at the moment building
another fencing machine in order to speed up the process of fence
making to building Stage 1b.
We have perfected our Night Hunts which is also part of Stage 1B
with many of our walking lions i.e. Amy, Elsa, and now the 3P’s.
