African Impact in London, January 2006 - Our latest travels
took us not to some far off corner of Africa, but to the jungle
that is London...
African Impact sent over a team to exhibit at the Daily Telegraph
Adventure Travel show in London in the middle of January where we
were promoting our volunteer programmes.
There were a group of 4 African Impact staff at the show, as well
as a couple of past volunteers helping out, which was fantastic.
There was definitely a lot of positive response to our products,
particularly, I think, because we are an African-based organisation
and are involved on the ground in Africa rather than just representing
projects as a job. Being uniquely focused on Africa also has the
added effect of being the specialists in our field, which I think
will stand us in good stead with competitors who offer a more general
array of programmes.
The volunteer market is ever-growing, with 'eco-tourism' becoming
more and more 'fashionable' it seems. Although we are still new,
and slowly building up a database of potential volunteers and developing
our own projects along with those we assist through supplying volunteers,
I really do think that there is a niche for ourselves within this
growing market.
There are a lot of cowboys out there, and I believe that principled
projects and dedicated coordinators and team leaders on the ground
is what is going to make all the difference in terms of creating
high-impact and effective programmes that benefit not only local
communities and wildlife, but also change the lives of those who
come out to work with us as volunteers. We have found that volunteers
who leave and say 'this project has changed my life' is something
that makes our work totally worthwhile!
