Here are some facts concerning our the Midlands
Black Rhino programme that we work with in Zimbabwe.
A group of us from African Impact visited the programme recently,
and whilst we were there we learnt the following:
- The conservancy has lost 12 rhino's to poachers in the last
12 months, which is excessive in very endangered black rhino terms
- A darting and horn implanting operation that was scheduled for
mid-November has had to be cancelled by the usual donors (Sebakwe
Black Rhino Trust (SBRT) registered in the UK, and SAVE Australia)
as they do not have sufficient funding to go ahead with it. An
op of this nature entails helicopters, ground teams, implant chips
that cost US$300 each, drugs for chemical immobilisation of the
Rhino’s, skilled vets, scouts and ground crew. An operation
of this size would cost approximately US$10,000 for one week,
and would equip 12 new
rhinos out of the conservancy population of approximately 40 rhinos
with tracking implants.
- As you may know, the Black Rhino are highly, highly endangered.
- I am continuously inspired by the people on the ground that
are facilitating the programme. They are real salt of the earth
guys who live and breathe for the bush and their rhino's, and
are not remotely involved in any of this for monetary gain or
personal credit.
- We are determined to do our utmost to get more people involved
and to raise awareness for this programme – so keep the
Black Rhino’s in mind.
