Kenya – an overwhelming plethora of wildlife and scarlet-clad
Masai herders...
We went on to explore the heart of the Masai world, in Samburuland.
Surrounded by complete Kenyan wilderness
and Masai villages, and in a land where giraffe are as prolific
as goats, we met up with a very dedicated lady named Shanni Wreford-Smith.
Shanni has initiated the Nomadic Communities Trust, and her group
of expert nurses and medical staff operate mobile clinics out into
the heart of these nomadic communities.
The medical staff teach AIDS and
HIV awareness, as well as give education on female circumcision
in an area where current practice figures are as high as 90%. Shanni’s
mobile clinic currently sees over 90 000 people a year in the vast
areas in which they work.
Shanni also has plans to expand her mobile clinic to include an
arm that will use camels for transport for medical staff and equipment
out into some of the more remote areas of Kenya and Samburuland.
