Volunteer Zambia – community work at schools, the orphanage & the local hospital

Newsletters » July / Aug 2005 » Volunteer Zambia

Volunteer in Zambia where you can work as a teaching assist, work with orphans or work at the local clinic/hospital

Zambia, home to ‘Mosi-oa-tunya’ (The Smoke That Thunders) this is how the locals refer to the magnificent spray that is elevated above the Victoria Falls. Against this backdrop we find the town of Livingstone, Zambia’s tourist mecca and the “adventure capital of Africa”. Your placement at the Zambia volunteer work experience begins with our 4-day orientation programme (included in your fee) and then the opportunity to immerse yourselves in the local community to make a positive impact on this corner of Zambia.

Volunteer at the schools

Typical schools in Livingstone work on a system known as ‘hot-seating’. Having too many children to accommodate, they run two or even three school sessions per day. Our Zambia volunteers can work as teaching assistants in the classroom, or with sports coaching programmes which keep children off the streets. You will find that most of the schools have meagre and ill-equipped facilities, but a wealth of children with a desire to learn.

Work with children at the LISCA Orphanage

LISCA (Livingstone Street Kids Community Association) is a place that will warm your heart. The orphanage gives shelter for approximately 120 orphaned children and provides them with a basic education. Volunteers in Zambia have the chance to make a real impact on the lives of these children and to assist with their learning experience. There is also a hall adjacent to the orphanage and volunteers work with the orphans to organise drama productions – a valuable outlet for their creativity.

Work at the local hospital: Maramba Clinic

Maramba Clinic is a government owned and run clinic and is the largest of 11 in the immediate Livingstone area. Maramba is a primary healthcare facility and the first point of call for un-well residents of Maramba Village. Here decisions are made as to whether patients need just reassurance, treatment, observation, or emergency referral to the main Livingstone Hospital. There are no doctors based at the clinic, the clinic is headed by three clinical officers, and staffed by a basic body of nurses.

The presence of helping hands in almost every area of Maramba clinic is more than gratefully received by the staff, who are working at an immense pace in an attempt to keep up with the demands placed on them.

Volunteers at the Zambian hospital are invaluable and will be involved in many aspects of the hospital.

Some volunteers, particularly those studying or considering a career in the medical profession, may also wish to join clinicians in consultations, where there is an enormous amount to be learnt about tropical and infectious diseases.
