July / Aug 2005 » Where can we help in Africa as volunteers?
Find out where African Impact has started new volunteer projects and how easy it is for anyone to help in Africa as a volunteer?
A few weeks ago Sarah Conolly and Greg Bows traveled though out parts of Southern Africa searching for new projects where African Impact could help make a difference on the continent, and involve volunteers who have the dedication and enthusiasm that we have seen through all of you in the past.
Here is a brief outline of the projects that African Impact is now developing. My personal favorite would have to be the Mashatu Game Reserve Project. Here is an insight:
South Africa, Mozambique, Swaziland and Botswana: 18th – 28th July 2005
Botswana - Mashatu Research Participation Programme
The Africa of Old... This is raw Africa... Join highly experienced elephant and leopard researchers in the Northern Tuli Game Reserve, which borders on the Limpopo River in Southern Africa. Mashatu offers some of Africa’s best game viewing which you will have the opportunity to experience whilst out with the researchers. Be involved in data collection, monitoring of radio-collared animals and increase your knowledge of the bush. The plethora of game and your experienced guides and researchers will endear you to this rugged corner of Africa...
Mozambique -
Dolphin and Turtle Research Programme
White sands, coconut palms and the spectacular Indian Ocean stretching as far as the eye can see... This project is as exotic as it sounds. Based near the southern Mozambican city of Maputo, you will have the opportunity to immerse yourselves in the captivating local Afro-Portuguese culture and assist researchers with their vital studies of marine life, dolphins and turtles.
Swaziland
- Wildlife Reserve Assistance and Educational/Sports Programmes
This landlocked mystical African Kingdom is contained within South. Highlights include assisting the conservation team of the King’s own private nature reserves and educational development and sports coaching programmes at local village schools. White water raft on magical Swazi rivers that find their source in the mountains. Explore the vibrant capital of Mbabane and the Royal Village of Lobomba – a living museum of the traditional Swazi lifestlye. You will also find the locals to be overwhelmingly warm and welcoming.
South Africa -
‘The Wild Coast’ – 32°South Conservation and Education/Sports Development
Volunteer in rural and village schools along the scenic ‘Wild Coast’. The programme focuses on enhancing education and computer literacy skills and sports development.
Integrated into this programme is the Inkwenkwezi Conservation Initiative, a hands-on experience working alongside game rangers and field guides in the private reserve.
This part of the world is known as ‘the Wild Coast’ and is a gateway to the inland cultural mecca of the Transkei, which you will have the chance to explore further with organised excursions. Also available are PADI dive certifications, surfing lessons, and horse rides on the beach, which is one minute from where you will be staying.
Cape Town – ‘Project Childhood’ Street Kids’ Rehabilitation Programme
Vivacious Cape Town – one of the most stunning cities on the globe, is the home of the spectacular and unique Table Mountain and the heritage site of Nelson Mandela’s prison home, Robben Island.
Work with the South African Police Department at their community centre, facilitating the rehabilitation and re-integration of South Africa’s street kids of the Cape Town’s ‘Mother City’. The programme involves educational development and teaching, sports coaching and skills learning for the street children at the SAP development centre in the heart of the city.
We are very excited about these new Africa volunteer projects and are confident that African Impact and the enthusiastic volunteers will continue to make a difference in all the places where they choose to help in Africa as volunteers.
