Hwange wildlife volunteer project news, elephant facts and the problems with poachers and snares in the Hwange Natioanl Park
At the moment we have two new volunteers. So far they have sighted Hyena, darted, removed old collars and put new ones on. They’ve also camped out in the Hwange National Park where they tracked lion, saw cheetah and tried to dart an elephant but got away, so they darted a buffalo instead, all victims of snares!
I visited Hwange National Park not too long ago and came across a herd of Elephant who unfortunately had a couple of snared calves. We observed one of them with half a trunk missing! The other one had a snare round the ankle, which was deeply imbedded. It was too dark to dart and remove the snare or even take a photo but I was able to get a photo of the other calf.
Hwange National Park has a huge snare/poaching problem. Even though it’s illegal it’s happening all over! It’s so bad you are bound to see a snare within the hour!
