Lesotho - Country Information

The Kingdom of Lesotho is enclosed within South Africa and offers one of the continent’s highest mountain ranges. A haven for adventurers, her rugged outdoors is a land of the extremes. Two of South Africa’s principle rivers, the Orange and the Thugela flowing from the mountainous regions, feed tourist activities along their banks.

Lesotho Visas

Citizens of most Western countries, the United States and most Commonwealth countries are granted an entry permit free of charge at point of entry into Lesotho.

The standard stay allowed is two weeks, although extensions can be arranged.
All travellers entering Lesotho should have at least 6 months until the date of expiry in their passport.

Lesotho Health, Vaccinations, HIV/AIDS & Drinking Water

Malaria - Malaria prophylactics recommended by your personal physician are necessary. As well as insect repellent and covering yourself up with long trousers and light cotton long-sleeved shirts in the evenings.

Vaccinations - Hepatitis A, Polio, and Typhoid. Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory if you are travelling from any other Yellow fever infected area in Africa.

Vaccination against yellow fever is mandatory if travelling from an infected area, and recommended even if you are not. Be sure to have your vaccination record of yellow fever with you when you arrive.

HIV/AIDS - HIV/AIDS is a risk and it is recommended that you take all the necessary precautions

It is not necessary to drink bottled water in Lesotho.

Lesotho Weather & Climate
  • Lesotho’s mountainous regions are some of the highest in Southern Africa, and this makes for a unique climate.
  • Winter: May through to September. And it is not uncommon for there to be snow on the mountain peaks!
  • Rainy Season: October until March is the period with the heaviest rain falls
  • Summer: January - February are the hottest and wettest months.
  • Temperatures in the evenings and early mornings can be cool year round.

  • Lesotho’s capital city of Maseru is delightfully laid back
  • The town of Teyateyaneng is as eccentric as it sounds, housing beautiful cultural relics and crafts.
  • Lesotho’s infamous Mount Thaba-Bosiu is the mountain stronghold of one of the Kingdom’s ancient rulers, and offers vistas of antique settlements and glorious scenery.
